21.12.2002 Rebetol worth 27,854.04 roubles was bought for Anton Kalinichev, the first Russian child that had had an unrelated marrow transplantation from a French donor in 1998.

18.12.2002 Dear friends,
We are whole-heartedly grateful to everybody who helps Serezha Aksentov. It is very difficult to say this, but, in spite of all the efforts, medicine cannot help him now. One can only hope for a miracle. It is impossible to proceed with Serezha's leukemia treatment because of a severe neurological pathology. And the means already collected with your help is sufficient for treating this pathology. So we stop collecting the money for him for the time being. Please pray for Serezha.

16.12.2002 L-asparginase Medac worth 57,266.88 roubles was bought for all patients of the Oncohematology Department.

14.12.2002 Mstislav Rostropovich, an outstanding musician (cellist), visited the RCCH on December 12. His time is planned to the last minute, he gives concerts all over the world. But still he finds time and energy for charity. He has never been indifferent to the destinies of the suffering people. For several decades, he has been giving charity concerts to support people who need help.
We were more than glad when Rostropovich found the time to visit the Children's Hospital. We have already written about his generous help to Kolya Altynov, a young musician who is now gravely ill and under treatment at the Oncohematology Department. When Rostropovich arrived at the hospital, he visited Kolya. This visit invigorated Kolya very much; the boy was so happy!
We were enraptured by his generosity, openness, and wonderful sincerity in his conversations with the children and parents of the Oncohematology Department. We saw not only a great musician but also a great personality with an extraordinary heart.
This meeting was an unforgettable event in the life of the hospital and in our own life. We hope that Rostropovich's visit to the ill children will make many people pay attention to the cause of charity.

12.12.2002 Vika Filippova died. She had immunodeficiency and acute lymphocytic leukemia. A relapse of leukemia happened in February 2002, and the only chance to save Vika was marrow transplantation from an unrelated donor. A donor was found, and two generous people helped Vika's parents, having paid 15 000 EUR for the activation of this donor.

The transplantation was urgently necessary, and we all hoped that it would take place in October, at the Marrow Transplantation Department of the St. Petersburg Medical University Clinic. But, unfortunately, this ward can host only six patients, and all the six beds were occupied by children with equally grave diseases. Vika had to wait for her turn. Naturally, it was impossible to operate Vika instead of another child and push somebody back in this line. The tragic aspect of the situation is that our medicine is still incapable of helping all people who need it. In November, the second relapse of leukemia occurred, and Vika died before the transplantation could be held.
The 2500 USD collected for Vika will be used to pay for an unrelated marrow transplantation to Katya Gorbunova, a girl from the General Hematology Department.
No words can tell how bravely Vika's parents fought for their daughter's life. And no words can express the despair and pain they feel now. In such terrible moments, only faith can console people and help them live further. Please pray for Vika's parents, so that your prayers might support them in their grief.

11.12.2002 Nikita Kirichenko went through two courses of intensive therapy, and the doctors are waiting for his response to this treatment. The fungal infection has receded, there are no signs of it now, and so Nikita does not need Ambisome.

Medicines (total cost 18,117.66 roubles) were bought for children from the Oncohematology Department: L-asparginase, Cytosar, and Metotrexate.

09.12.2002 Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends!
We are inviting you to an exhibition of children's works called "In an Open Color". The opening will take place on December 15, 2002, at the Library of Foreign Literature. You will see the drawings created by the young patients of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital. These children are gravely ill. They have to spend many months and sometimes even years in hospital wards. And yet they are filled with an incredible optimism and a very pure and clear feeling of the world around them. Try to look at life through their eyes, and maybe you will also discover something new or recall the way you looked at the world when you were a child, when feelings were stronger and colors were brighter. Don't be afraid of feeling somebody's pain; our painters managed to overcome it and transform it into creative work: bright, lively, childishly open and maturely wise. You will see real works of art, art without any allowance for the young age of the authors. Please come, and you will long remember this exhibition.

Address: All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature (Vserossiiskaya gosudarstvennaya biblioteka inostrannoi literatury). Taganskaya subway st., ul. Nikoloyamskaya 1, Central Entrance, 2nd floor (opposite to the tower building in the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment and the Illusion cinema).

07.12.2002 For the radiation treatment of Pasha Abanin, a boy from the Oncology Department, 15433.08 roubles was paid..
For bacterial tests of children with blood diseases, 15257 roubles was paid..

27.11.2002 Sasha Karmanov is discharged from hospital. He had an operation, and a neurostimulator was implanted. Sasha will do physical exercises and massage at home, and the stimulator will do its work at the same time. In several months, Sasha will have a control examination, and the doctors hope that this combination of rehabilitative measures may be fruitful.

21.11.2002 Galina Vishnevskaya and Mstislav Rostropovich bought 55 vials of Ambisome for Kolya. Gilead Sciences Co., the producer of this medicine, and Euroservice Co., its official distributor, gave 15 more vials to Kolya for free.

Zovirax, Rubomycine, and Vincristine (total cost 10259.48 roubles) were bought for two orphan girls, Sonya Rakhtyna and Ira Fandeeva, who came from Yakutia and the Altai region and are now being treated at the Oncohematology Department of the RCCH.

Tienam (total cost 13953.72 roubles) was bought for Bratchenko, a girl from the Kidney Transplantation Department.

14.11.2002 Caps and masks (total cost 1020 roubles) were bought for children from the Marrow Transplantation Department. Methotrexate (total cost 5500 roubles) was bought for patients of the Oncohematology Department.

11.11.2002 A small child that is currently under treatment at the Traumatology Department badly needs a stroller, maybe even a second-hand one.

10.11.2002 Thirty vials of Leukvorine (total worth 10 005.60 roubles) were bought for children from the Oncohematology Department.
A total of 30 014 roubles was paid for genetic tests of children with psychoneurological diseases.
Four infusomats worth 203 132 roubles were bought for the Oncohematology Department of the RCCH using the money collected by the Aiutateci a salvare i bambini association.
An anonymous contributor paid for the MRI examinations of 36 children.
Yura and Olya donated 800 USD for the gravely ill children.

6.11.02 Remicade (total worth 49 642.34 roubles) was bought for two small children from the Immunology Department: Katya Markova and Valera Khailov.

4.11.02 Dear friends,
Andrey, a good friend of our children, always ready to help them, recently had a birthday party. It was arranged in an unusual way, which, however, has already become a tradition in his family. The presents at the birthday party were collected not for Andrei himself but for children from our hospital. And this time, the guests brought 2100 USD to buy presents for children from the RCCH. Yura and Olya donated 1000 USD. Andrei decided to spend the whole sum to buy New Year presents for the children from our hospital. And we instantly recalled that it is time to get ready for the New Year celebration.
The children, as ever, are impatiently waiting for fine presents and for a real holiday. They will be very glad to see Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden, the circus, clowns, doll shows, and fairy tales. So we are asking everybody who can participate in the show himself/herself or help us in organizing it -- please respond right now!
But the things children probably love most are the presents. We try to make a present for each child each year. There are about 700 children who have to stay at hospital for the New Year. These are mainly children in a serious condition or undergoing a prolonged treatment. For many of them, especially for children from orphanages, a good New Year present is not just a gift but a token of love and care. Your help and participation in this important work will be appreciated.

29.10.02 Natasha Ivanova came to the hospital. Now she is at the Traumatology Department, under examination before the operation. The German specialists are already making a prosthesis for Natasha; 7500 roubles more has been paid for it. The remaining sum is 23898.92 roubles (ca. 770 USD). The best way is to transfer the money directly to Otto Bock Co.; the account number is given in Natasha's page.

28.10.02 An anonymous contributor from Ireland donated 10000 USD for molecular genetic examinations of children suffering from oncological diseases.

To determine the concentration of Cyclosporin in the blood of children with transplanted kidney, 3000 special test tubes (total worth 8460 roubles) were bought.

27.10.02 The Ambisome bought for Kolya Altynov will soon end. All the donations were used to buy and administer 189 vials of this medicine for ~50000 USD. This prevented Kolya from dying. There is 4000 USD left, and Kolya's parents will buy 16 more vials for this sum. We are afraid to think what may happen after that.
Kolya also has to undergo marrow autotransplantation.

25.10.2002 63 vials of Meronem (total worth 95729.76 roubles) were bought for Masha Zhestovskaya, a girl with mucoviscidosis.

24.10.2002 Natalia bought a wheelchair for Alana Kudzieva.

23.10.2002 Larisa Nikolaevna donated 600 USD to buy medicines for Kolya Altynov. 18 vials of Ambisome were bought for Kolya.

A device for the anesthesia of nerve plexes with needles for it, all worth 24956.52 roubles, was bought for children from the Department of Reconstructive Surgery.
Nastya and her friends bought 370 vials of Glucosteryl for all children from the Marrow Transplantation Department.
Dmitri bought 2 vials of Ambisome for David Khachatryan.

21.10.2002 An article about the Oncohematology Department was published in the Moskovskii Komsomolets newspaper. Many thanks to Irina Finyakina, the wonderful journalist.

20.10.2002 Kolya Altynov feels more or less good today. The chemotherapy block is going on. There are some side effects: nausea and low spirits. The Bukalov family from Rome donated 300 USD for Kolya's treatment.

16.10.2002 Serezha Pakhmutov had marrow autotransplantation on September 27.
His condition is good so far; the bone marrow has engrafted. He can already eat any food and will be discharged from hospital in a week.

Valeria Zyuzina came to the hospital for a control examination. She is in very good spirits. The results of the tests are good, indicating a remission of her disease. Valeria is still receiving Proleukin and must be regularly examined at the Marrow Transplantation Ward.

Nastya Kurbanova went home today. She started to take Proleukin, and her present condition is normal.

Glucosteril worth 7740 roubles was bought for Kirill Khrestin from the Marrow Transplantation Ward.

11.10.2002 Yesterday, on October 10, Ilya Sokolnikov was taken home in a good condition. The marrow transplantation was successful; the bone marrow has engrafted, and now Ilya already has his own cells protecting him from infections. So he was allowed to leave his sterile ward and go home at last. He can eat any food (not only sterile), puts on weight and now weighs 10 kg, just as a 13-month-old baby should. He has learned to dance and even tries to walk holding somebody's finger. Ilya is a very friendly boy, loving everybody and willing to see everybody. His favority toy is a phonendoscope; he takes it from the doctors and auscultates himself. He can also dance and show that "life is beautiful" with his thumb up.

A total of 25,652 roubles was paid for the bacterial tests of children from the hematological departments.

2.10.2002 Ten more vials of Tienam (total cost 6955.30 roubles) were bought for Kristina Gnetneva.
We are whole-gratedly grateful to Artikon Co., which installed the 1C accounting software on our computer on preferential terms.

27.09.2002 Alexander from Dubna and Dmitri bought three vials of Ambisome for David Khachatryan from the Oncohematology Department.

Ten vials of Tienam (total cost 6937.92 roubles) were bought for Kristina Gnetneva from the Kidney Transplantation Department.

26.09.2002 Four vials of Ambisome worth 31,737.20 roubles were bought for David Khachatryan, 12 y.o., from the Oncohematology Department.

22.09.2002 Kolya was transferred from the intensive care unit back into a ward of the Oncohematology Department. Now he must lie under a Pelican setup, which creates a sterile atmosphere, and constantly wear an oxygen mask. He says he feels "better than yesterday but still bad."

20.09.2002 We have received a letter from Nastya Tyurina's mother.
Dear kind and compassionate people!
I am addressing everybody who did not stay indifferent to my plea when I asked to help Nastya Tyurina, my daughter. Nastya really needs to move by herself, and only a orthesis can help her. Buying a good orthesis was impossible for us. Many thanks to the people who helped my daughter and me fulfil this dream. Now she can walk like a normal person. Nastya and I, her mother, thank you very much for your help and attention to our destiny. It is so wonderful that you have such compassionate and kind hearts!
Marina Alexandrovna Tyurina.

19.09.2002 Kolya Altynov was operated yesterday. The operation began at 11 a.m., lasted 3 hours, and ended more or less well. Seven aspergillomas were removed from the left lung and three from the right lung. The blood losses are minimal. There were no complications. After the operation, Kolya was placed in the intensive care unit for the mechanical ventilation of lungs. He woke up in the evening and started to breathe by himself, and so the mechanical ventilation setup was switched off.

Yulia donated 1500 USD for Kolya's treatment, Katya donated 1000 USD, and Lena donated her blood. Many thanks!

We will inform you of all further news. We are very grateful to everybody for supporting the children with your prayers. Please do not stop praying for Kolya, because the most difficult time is beginning now.

Pavel paid for four vials of Ambisome to be bought for Kolya.

18.09.2002 After an article about Kolya Altynov appeared in the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, many people responded to it: Vladimir bought 40 vials of Ambisome for Kolya, Irena and Dmitri donated 5000 USD for his treatment, Anna donated 2000 USD, Igor and his friends donated 900 USD, Tatiana donated 100 USD, and Larisa donated 300 USD. Many thanks to all of them! The operation will begin today at 11 a.m. Please pray for its good outcome. We will inform you as soon as there are any further news. 12.09.2002 Nadezhda, Alexander, and their American friends have sent wonderfully pretty clothes for the smallest patients of our hospital: velvet dresses, tiny suits, and sparkling boots, all as if from a fairy tale. We are very grateful for this generous gift. Indeed, everything is very dull at a hospital: one-color walls and smocks, nearly always a depressed mood. That is why the children and their parents value any brightly colored thing so much. In such circumstances, these are not just clothes but a positive factor, a sign of somebody's love and support, which helps one cheer up. Mary Garrard, an American teacher, has also sent us needlework and beadwork kits. It is a special present for children that have to undergo a prolonged treatment. This work alleviates their suffering. The children create lovely things with their own hands and can admire the results of their efforts. We also thank Mary for the medical gloves for the Marrow Transplantation Ward, which were received just at the moment when there was a great shortage.

07.09.2002 Tatyana, Ilya, Lisa, and another Tatyana bought 19 vials of Ambisome for Kolya Altynov, an extremely talented 15-year-old musician suffering from lymphoma. But this amount will suffice only till Tuesday. Now Kolya's life depends on this medicine. He needs four vials daily, and one vial costs 272 USD. Please help the doctors in their struggle for Kolya's life.

06.09.2002 A total of 13,706 roubles was paid for the bacterial tests of children with blood diseases.

03.09.2002 A marrow donor for Vika Filippova was found in Germany. Now he will go through a medical examination and, if he is in good health, his bone marrow will be taken and shipped to Russia. The whole procedure costs 15,000 EUR (an account is already available, *see here*), and, if the money is collected and everything goes right, Vika go to the Marrow Transplantation Clinic of St. Petersburg University in October.

02.09.2002 Kirill and Nastya, our children's constant friends, brought presents again: TV sets for the Oncohematology Ward and Marrow Transplantation Ward. Thank you very much!

30.08.2002 Dear friends,
our foundation was recently audited, and the auditing showed that our account records are true and valid. You can see the certificates of accounts (in Russian) here:

Certificate of accounts for 2000
Certificate of accounts for 2001

We are fully aware that auditing and accounting are just a pile of numbers and special terms for most people. However, this pile in our case consists of your real donations, from very modest to enormous, and these donations, in turn, directly influence many children's lives in our hospital.
All of you well know the first page of our site, with children's photographs and their parents' desperate pleas for help. And your help reaches them. We are more than grateful to you for these donations and hope that your participation will go on.
However, it is evident that this first page hosts only part of the little patients who need help. It often happens that some children need certain medicines very urgently (exacerbations, extreme situations, grave complications) but the hospital does not have such medicines. Your donations really save these children's lives in such cases. Indeed, many people give their money for sick children "in general" rather than for a certain child, and we can often see positive results of these donations.
In addition, your constant support makes it possible to make some absolutely necessary tests and examinations that are not yet available at our hospital but indispensable for treating some serious diseases.
We are whole-heatedly grateful to you for your constant concern with the life of the children's hospital.

26.08.2002 Meronem, Cymevene, and Biseptol (total cost 64 347.25 roubles) were bought for Lyusya Ratnikova from the Kidney Transplantation Ward. After kidney transplantation, the use of immunosuppressive medicines (which are necessary to prevent donor organ rejection) caused an exacerbation of the life-threatening citomegaloviral infection.

16.08.2002 Expendables (caps, masks, gloves) worth 1990 roubles were bought for Misha Parshikov from the Oncohematology Ward.

08.08.2002 Three vials of Ambisome worth 23,355.42 roubles were bought for Dima Brusnitsyn from the Marrow Transplantation Ward.

07.08.2002 Each time, it is very difficult to tell and write about the children's deaths. It is hard to find the words that can express the feeling of horror and despair, experienced first of all by their parents, and also by other people who knew those children and loved them. Two more children died from leukemia: Igor Moskalenko and Oleg Mazilov. Even the best up-to-date methods of treatment, including marrow transplantation, did not save them.

When Igor's condition was already very grave but the treatment continued, people coming to the hospital knew that the situation was almost hopeless but still gave their money (and sometimes large sums) to buy medicines and try to save his life. It might seem irrational to many, but the people who helped Igor did it willingly, because they could not deprive the boy and his parents of their last chance.

Oleg Mazilov was a very sociable and friendly boy. When Oleg learned that a benefactor bought medicines to him, he suddenly wanted to get in contact with that man and become his friend. And they became real friends, although they never saw each other. They wrote letters, phoned each other almost every day and were very close to each other. We are endlessly grateful to Sergei for this extraordinary friendship with the boy. This emotional and spiritual side of charity and mercy is no less important than material support.

05.08.2002 Elena asked us to tell about the life of Vanya Soskov. But, since many people are concerned with his destiny, we will answer her question here, in the News column rather than in the Guestbook.

Vanya has just spent a week at the RCCH and had a complete examination. The results of all the tests are normal; he feels all right and was quickly discharged home. He has changed greatly during the last year: he is more grown-up, more sociable, more amiable. He had good academic results during the last year, especially in math, in spite of having to spend much time out of school. He is still studying music and turned out to be very talented. In spite of Vanya's difficult temper, his foster mother Nadya tries to overcome the serious difficulties in their life with great patience and humor. And she has achieved brilliant results because of her patience, courage, care, and devotion to the boy.

05.08.2002 Six packs of Orungal worth 7353.72 roubles were bought for Maxim Semenov from the Immunology Department.

11.07.2002 We have sad news. Three children died: Danila Perepelkin, Igor Kotov, and Igor Abramov. All of them suffered very much, and it was painful to look at their slow agony. Although their condition was very grave, it was still necessary to do everything for their support, and the doctors did all that was possible.

Doctors from the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital heroically fought for Danila Perepelkin's life, and then, during the last year, doctors from Switzerland and Israel also took care of him. Danila was invited to a course of treatment free of charge, but the terrible illness, immunodeficiency, had already gone too far, and only palliative help was possible. When Danila came back to Russia, many compassionate people donated a lot of money for the medicines that could support his life. Although Danila was just a little boy, he was also a very remarkable and gifted person. Everybody who knew him felt deep respect and sympathy for him.

The same could be said about Igor Kotov. He had a very serious disease, mucoviscidosis, and he bore it very courageously. During the last months, Igor was already a patient of a hospital for grown-ups and hoped that he would be able to pass the critical age - that of 18 years. After this age, people can live with this disease. All of us hoped for the same.

And the third loss is Igor Abramov, who died from cancer. Unfortunately, marrow transplantation failed to save Igor. He was a very kind, open-hearted, and merry boy, and his death is a great loss and pain for all of us. We don't know which words can console his parents, who are now alone with their grief, but we want to support them at least in our hearts and only hope that God will not leave them.

09.07.2002 For the bacterial tests of children from hematological departments, 20372 roubles was paid. For Slava Abakumov, a baby (1 y.o.) from the Immunology Department, 7 vials of Cymevene worth 11957.33 roubles was bought. A leg prosthesis worth 15200 roubles was bought for Pavel Volchkov from the Immunology Department.

27.06.2002 Sergei bought 3 vials of Daunoxome for Olya Alexandrova, who was admitted to the General Hematology Ward in a critical condition. Gilead Co. donated three more vials of this expensive medicine. A treatment course was immediately started for Olya, and her condition is better now.

Ten vials of Ambisome were bought for Igor Moskalenko and Olya Krivonosova from the Marrow Transplantation Ward. Both children have a fungal infecion, which may be treated only with Ambisome, because the kidney can no longer bear other antifungal drugs. Unfortunately, this medicine is very expensive; one vial costs 242 USD. Therefore we are asking for your help in buying it.

Farmorubicine worth 6200.04 roubles was bought for Gorbatyuk, a patient of the Oncohematology Ward.

Medicines for marrow transplantation worth 30 802.70 roubles were bought for Dima Brusnitsyn (1 year 7 months old) from the Oncohematology Ward: Aminosteril, Glucosteril, Diflucan, and Losec. Expendables worth 7340 roubles were also bought.

An anonymous contributor paid 7300 roubles for radiation treatment of Zhenya Ilyina (3 y.o.) from the Oncohematology Ward at the Institute of Radiology.

An anonymous contributor paid 4500 roubles for the marrow typing of Andrei Rozhkov from the Oncohematology Ward and his family.

Maxim bought 14 more vials of Ambisome for Olya Krivonosova and Igor Moskalenko.

10.06.2002 Igor Moskalenko is in a very grave condition. He is still suffering from aplasia, and, in this situation, he has now got sepsis. Granulocyte transfusion may be helpful. All friends and relatives of Igor's parents with a suitable blood group have already donated their blood, and donors with group A(Rh-) are now badly needed. We are asking everybody who can help Igor to respond to this plea. And please pray for his recovery.

Since Igor Moskalenko is in such a condition, he may not take Proleukin that was bought for him. Therefore, this medicine was handed over to Valeria Zyuzina. She is feeling more or less well; there is no fever, and the results of tests are good. She is now taking Proleukin and gradually getting ready for leaving the hospital.

Katya Putyaikina feels well. The donor marrow has engrafted and is functioning; the results of tests are good. But, since she went through a very complicated transplantation with T-cell depletion, she has got no immunity of her own so far, and so she will have to spend several months in an absolutely sterile ward to avoid any infections.

Ilya Sokolnikov, who went through the same kind of operation as Katya Putyaikina, also feels more or less well. The results of tests are not bad, but it is too early to speak about the transplanted bone marrow as engrafted. Just as Katya, he will have to spend a long time in an isolation ward. But so far he is rapidly gaining weight and developing. He likes to play with his toys and communicate with everybody around him.

An anonymous contributor has paid for NMR tomographic examinations of nine children. Here is the list of these children.

06.06.2002 A total of 10 900.83 roubles was paid for reagents for the PCR diagnostics of leukemias.

05.06.2002 Expendables worth 9928.80 roubles were bought for PCR diagnostics of leukemias.

12 packs of Orungal worth 14 615.04 roubles were bought for Maxim Semenov from the Immunology Department.

Danila and Alexei bought a surgical saw for the hospital. We had asked everybody to assist in purchasing it in order to help three children: Anton Ignatov (6 y.o.) from the Olekminsk orphanage in Yakutia, Albina Khetagurova (3 y.o.) from the Vladikavkaz orphanage, and Artem Yantsyan (14 y.o.) from the Berezniki orphanage in the Vladimir region. Now all the three children have already gone through the operations; everything went well.

Dacarbazine and Vinblastine worth 10117.14 roubles were bought for Pakhmutov from the Hematology Ambulance.

30.05.2002 Misha Zelenkov died of peritonitis in the intensivecare ward of a hospital in Rostov-na-Donu on May 27. Misha had systemic lupus erythematosus, which did not respond to a usual treatment. The doctors offered a marrow transplantation. Preliminary treatment with powerful immunosuppressive drugs helped Misha; he felt better and could at last leave hospital and go home with good results of blood tests. But, quite unexpectedly, he had peritonitis.
Misha was a gifted boy, very talented in artistry and music. He participated in all festivals at the Immunology Department. He usually played comic roles and managed to amuse the spectators in spite of his disease. Misha was a old resident of the hospital. Everybody knew him, and everybody loved him. He tried to overcome his disease together with the doctors and his mother, and he wanted to live very much. His mother did everything that was possible. She heroically fought for her son's life.
Misha was a bright and very attractive person. When the news of his death reached the hospital, many people wept.

22.05.2002 Dear friends of my son Dima Kuzmin!
Thank you very much for helping us in buying an oxygen concentrator and for providing financial assistance to my children. We would never manage to buy the concentrator by ourselves; this is totally impossible for us. One can hardly overestimate the importance and timeliness of this present. Dima often has acute conditions in summer, and breathing insufficiency develops. But now the boy can have a normal breath! Dima was so glad to have this present; he said that a concentrator is even better than a TV set.
Blessed be the giving hand!
May God guard you.
Yours gratefully,
Lilia Mikhailovna Kuzmina

16.05.2002 Six packs of Orungal worth 7284.42 roubles were bought for Maxim Semenov from the Immunology Department.

15.05.2002 Dear friends,
If you often visit our site, you may notice that the photographs of children that need your help are constantly renewed. When we manage to raise the money for the treatment of a child, information on another child is immediately placed on the same page of the site. This is the sad truth: some children recover, other children fall ill, and we cannot alter this course of events. But we can give a chance for recovery to the gravely ill children. Unfortunately, no doctor can guarantee that this or another child will be saved, especially when the diseases are so serious. Therefore (it is bitter truth, but we have no right to conceal it from you), the photographs of some children at our site become outlined with black frames. Our children die, and their deaths make us suffer. The children who have recently died are Serezha Parshutin, Edgar Martirosyan, Tanya Sholokhova, Alesha Strogov, Misha Koverzyuk, Jebrael Muzhahoev, and Dima Zaitsev.
But these bitter losses do not deprive us from hopes. We will go on with this work, believing that more and more children will recover year after year.
Prof. Alexei Alexandrovich Maschan has written the following convincing words for all the readers of our site:
"First of all, dear friends, I want to express my whole-hearted gratitude to you for your amazing help to our children. It is only thanks to this help that many of them have survived, although they were virtually doomed to die. The diseases we are trying to treat are absolutely fatal in the absence of up-to-date treatment programs. Therefore, some time ago any assistance provided by you made it possible to perform such a treatment and actually meant saving a child. Now the situation has seriously changed. There is a "Children's Hematology" federal program, which finances the treatment of the most widespread hematological diseases: acute lymphocytic leukemia, aplastic anemia, lymphomas. Thanks to this program, most of our patients are provided with medicines and receive their treatment without serious problems. Most patients with oncological diseases need a conservative therapy, and only a minority have to go through marrow transplantation. It is a very expensive operation, and its federal financing is totally insufficient. And raising the funds for the transplantations is the most frequent reason why we ask for your help. The prognoses for the transplanted patients may differ. Depending on the type of the disease, its stage, clinical condition of the child, and kind of transplantation, the chances for the recovery vary from 90% to 10--15% irrespective of the country where the transplantation takes place. Some foreign clinics follow the principle of performing marrow transplantations only for the children with the most favorable prognosis. But this is not our way. Our aim is to use any chance for survival, even if it is purely theoretical for some patients. Naturally, we may not publish the information on the chances of our patients: it is absolutely confidential. Nevertheless, we can say that we ask you to help only the children that have a real chance for recovery after the transplantation. We understand that a 10-20% chance for recovery, which may seem a great hope for our patients, may seem slight to those who provide the money for their treatment. We also understand the terrible disappointment you can feel when a child dies after so much compassion has been felt for him or her and so much money has been spent. And some people may be grieved when they think all this money gave nothing but additional suffering to the child. But we want to reassure these people: everything you grant will be used for our patients with the utmost efficiency. Alas, hematology is the field of medicine where sad outcomes are still very frequent, and one can never predict if this or another child will survive. But we are absolutely sure that all these children would surely die if the information about them were not published at the site and the money for their treatment were not raised.
It was only 5-7 years ago that children with various types of leukemia, aplastic anemias, or lymphomas survived very rarely, and marrow transplantation operations were successful only in unique instances. Now the situation has seriously improved. A great statistical work concerning the treatment and recovery of hematological patients is going on, and these statistical results are very encouraging. We will soon tell you about them on this site. Thank you very much once more!
Professor A.A. Maschan

13.05.2002 The doctors of the Marrow Transplantation Ward are more than satisfied with Katya Putyaikina's condition. She has recovered completely by today; her leukocyte count is 5.3 thousand, and she is feeling surprisingly well. All the signs of a graft vs. host disease on her skin have disappeared. But the critical time is not yet over; however, if she feels well for about a month and a half, the probability of life-threatening complications will lessen day after day.

13.05.2002 Valeria Zyuzina had marrow autotransplantation on Thursday, May 9. So far everyting is going as planned: there are no complications, and she feels all right. But it is too early to speak about the final results.

12.05.2002 An anonymous contributor has again paid for the NMR tomography and computer tomography of 21 children. Here is the list of these children.

Ten vials of Ambisome worth 76 593 roubles (ca. 2500 USD) were bought for Igor Moskalenko using the money transferred by Billcards Webmasters Team Co. Unfortunately, Igor's condition has not yet changed. His own bone marrow does not engraft, although this situation is rather rare. Igor has been in aplasia for three months, and the danger of various infectious complications is great. He had been receiving Fungizone up to now, but this medicine already has a bad effect on his kidney, and Ambisome was bought. Igor immediately began to take it.

Katya Putyaikina went through a haploidentical marrow transplantation. So far her condition is good, her sister's bone marrow gets gradually engrafted, and 1000 leukocytes have already appeared. There is a light rash, a sign of a graft vs. host disease (grade 1). Pains in the mouth (mucositis) are already over, but Katya does not yet eat by herself: she is still afraid.

Ilya Sokolnikov also had a haploidentical marrow transplantation at the same time as Katya. His bone marrow has also started to engraft. But this process will be long in his case, much longer than in children with leukemias, who have this operation after a severe chemotherapy. Ilya became very merry and playful, greets everybody who passes by his ward with his pacifier. But he will yet have to spend a long time in his isolation ward, no less than 4-5 months.

6.05.2002 Danila and Alexei bought ten more vials of Ambisome for Vika Chernego.

5.05.2002 Danila and Alexei bought 20 vials of Ambisome for Vika Chernego, 2 y.o., from the Oncohematology Ward.

26.04.2002 Sony Co. made an incredibly valuable present for children from the RCCH: eight large and five small TV sets, and three video tape recorders. For children at the hospital, who sometimes cannot leave their wards for months, TV is often the only way of amusement. Now there are TV sets not only in the halls of the hospital sections but also in the admission ward, dialysis rooms, and in the wards of the most gravely ill patients. We are whole-heartedly grateful to Sony Co. and convinced that their present will bring much joy to the children. Many, many thanks!

24.04.2002 Alexei bought medicines and expendables worth 2000 USD for Ilya Sokolnikov, who is only 8 months old and has to undergo marrow transplantation because of severe immunodeficiency.

22.04.2002 Dear friends!
We want to ask you to help three orphan children: Anton Ignatov, 6 y.o., from the Olekminsk orphanage (Yakutia); Albina Khetagurova, 3 y.o., from the Vladikavkaz orphanage (Ossetia), and Artem Yantsian, 14 y.o., from the Berezniki orphanage (Vladimir region), who are now at the Center of Recontructive Surgery, RCCH. All the three children have serious congenital maxillofacial defects.
We do not dare place their portraits on this site, because we don't want to shock you with these terrible photographs. But the children are not to blame for their deformed faces, which, fortunately, may largely be corrected via a surgical operation. The parents of these children left them immediately after their birth because of these defects. So there is nobody to help them. And serious help is needed. Doctors from the Department of Reconstructive Surgery are ready to perform the complicated operations that will give these children a normal look, but they need a new saw for these operations, because a German electric saw purchased by the hospital 12 years ago is now out of order because of technical wear. So we are asking you to help us in raising the funds for buying a new saw (Medicon, Germany), which costs 7000 EUR.
These children have been going through a severe ordeal since their birth. Each day and each hour they understand that they look different from all others. But, in spite of this constant pain, they are not bitterly resentful and remain just merry and cheerful children. We would be very happy if they could begin a normal life, and not just in hospital, where they feel everybody's compassion and good attitude, but also in the world outside, and so that nobody would mock at them, nobody would stare at them, and they would no longer suffer because of their look.

Vladimir paid 200 USD for bacterial tests of children from the Hematology Ward.

18.04.2002 A hepatitis vaccine worth 24852.30 roubles was bought for children from the Kidney Transplantation Ward.
For the Oncohematology Ward, 40 g of Holoxan worth 43487.20 roubles was bought.

16.04.2002 Dear friends!
We are whole-heartedly grateful to you for helping Katya Putyaikina. All the lacking medicines and expendables were bought extremely quickly due to your help, and Katya's marrow transplantation is scheduled for next Thursday.

Sergei bought ATG for 17 250 roubles, Meronem and Zovirax for 60 632 roubles, and Albumin for 9800 roubles. Unilever Co. bought 20 vials of Ambisome worth 153 186 roubles for Katya Putyaikina.

10.04.2002 Nadezhda and her friends donated 4000 USD to buy medicines for children with leukemias.

Dr. Dmitri Nikolaevich Balashov, who heads the Marrow Transplantation Ward, told us about Katya Putyaikina and the specificity of the future marrow transplantation in her case. Katya had aplastic anemia several years ago. Unfortunately, this disease may pass into leukemia in some cases, and this is what happened to Katya. The treatment was thus greatly complicated: firstly, because the prognosis for secondary tumors is usually much worse; secondly, because they require a totally different therapy. The only chance for curing the disease in such cases is marrow transplantation. But Katya's sister Yulia is not a fully matching donor. Therefore, the doctors decided to perform haploidentical transplantation. The sister's bone marrow was purified from cells that may cause either rejection or some other lethal reaction of the organism using a special CliniMax device, purchased for the hospital by one of our constant benefactors and friends. This is the first time such a device has appeared in Russia. Its appearance will significantly increase the number of patients with oncological diseases that may be helped, because only one-third of the patients who need marrow transplantation have matching donors. Such operations have been going on in other countries for more than ten years, and specialists have also tried to perform them in Russia, but they are very expensive and involve serious administrative and financial problems.
The procedure of working with CliniMax is rather simple: a special set in inserted into the device, and a bag containing the bone marrow or the blood stem cells is attached to this set. Antibodies with microscopic ferromagnetic particles are introduced into the bag. These antibodies get attached to the cells required for the transplantation, and then the device makes all the mixture flow through a high-intensity magnetic field. All the cells attached to the particles remain inside the magnet, and the remaining cells are washed away and poured outside. Afterwards, the magnetic field is switched off, the system is washed through, and the necessary cells are collected in a separate bag. This procedure purifies the bone marrow up to the degree of 99.99%. The bone marrow of Katya's sister Yulia was purified just in this way, and now it will be stored in a refrigerator at a very low temperature till the day of the transplantation.

09.04.2002 Reagents and expendables worth 30 635.70 roubles were purchased for the PCR diagnostics of leukemias.

Ten packs of Orungal worth 12 102.80 roubles were bought for Maxim Semenov from the Immunology Department.

02.04.2002 Twelve platelet sets worth 51 054 roubles were bought for children from the Immunology Ward.

01.04.2002 Tatiana bought hearing aids for Rafil Hafizov and Masha Zhestovskaya from the Department of Medical Genetics.

27.3.2002 The doctors of the Department of Microvascular Surgery told us about Zhenya Privalov's condition. After a neurostimulator was implanted, the huge trophic ulcers on his spine and heel closed completely, and the legs can bend now since they are no longer swollen. Now he is capable of controlling urination by himself, although so far he is sometimes reluctant to do this. The doctors believe that the stimulator allowed Zhenya to achieve a significant progress in a very short time. Physiotherapy would produce the same effect in 12-18 months, if not more. Now Zhenya needs rehabilitation, and soon he will go to a rehabilitation sanatorium in Gorki.

26.3.2002 The money transferred by Billcards Webmasters Team Co. was used to buy 500 vials of Cefobid (an antibiotic drug) worth 62 410 roubles for all children from the Department of Medical Genetics.

22.3.2002 Two packs of Nutrison (a medical nutrition) worth 7600 roubles were bought for Vova Beskrovnyi, 4 y.o., from the Gastroenterology Department.

21.3.2002 An anonymous contributor paid for the NMR tomography and computer tomography of the following children:
26.02.2002 Katya Kretova, 13 y.o. Lymphocytic lymphoma. Examination needed to obtain more precise information on the lesion of knee joints. 6468 roubles.
26.02.2002 Ignat Minibaev, 5 y.o. Acute lymphocytic leukemia. Sudden convulsions. Examination needed to exclude impairment of blood circulation. 6134 roubles.

13.03.02 Misha Parshikov, 14 y.o. Askin tumor. Search for metastases. 4347 roubles.
15.03.02 Vladislav Shushpannikov, 3 y.o. Acute lymphocytic leukemia; epilepsy. Exclusion of a cerebral tumor. 3500 roubles.
15.03.02 Dima Brusnitsyn, 16 months. Medulloblastoma of posterior cranial fossa. Control of tumor dissemination. 3500 roubles.

20.03.2002 Olesya Andreeva died on Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. This 13-year-old girl was a pure soul. She believed in God, and during her last days she asked Him not to prolong her unbearable agony any more. The last thing she did on earth was a present for her mother, an embroidered picture of a vase with flowers. She still had time for the vase, and the flowers were brought to her burial service. White roses and red tulips. "When children die, they turn into angels," said Father George Chistyakov in his farewell speech. "We believe that they become our invisible guardians and companions, who will never leave us. We invisibly meet them through the Eucharist and in our prayers." Just as Olesya's mother held her hand up to the last moment of the girl's life, Olesya's soul will now support her parents, as in Pushkin's famous epitaph to a baby: "He is smiling at the earthly exile, Blesses his mother and prays for his father."
After the burial service, Olesya's body was taken to her native town of Bezhetsk. And when Olesya's mother Valya was standing on the footboard of the bus, her body all in sunlight, she looked at each of us in silence, as a parting. She found the strength to smile at everybody. There was so much belief and love in her eyes that we just stood motionless, feeling this parting as the minutes of real sanctity.

Orungal for 12 102 roubles was bought for Maxim Semenov from the Immunology Ward. Twelve platelet sets worth 1608 USD were bought for the Immunology Ward..

Oleg Mazilov feels well after his marrow transplantation. He has already started to eat, go out to the hall, play with other children, and even walk outside. But he still needs blood and platelet transfusions, so the treatment is going on. He has already started to receive Proleukin; the first course lasted five days. Sergei bought an additional amount of Diflucan (2542 roubles) for Oleg.

Igor Babenko is already getting discharged from hospital and going home after marrow transplantation. His blood readings improve slowly but steadily. Igor is getting prepared for departure, he is in excellent spirits, especially after eating his first ice-cream after many days. Unfortunately, he has got an individual intolerance to Proleukin, and the doctors prescribed him another medicine, Roaccutan, which can also maintain a prolonged remission. Therefore, the money collected was used to buy 12 packs of Roaccutan (worth 29 145.88 roubles) for Igor.

Igor Moskalenko had marrow transplantation on February 28. Now he is in the early post-transplantation period, and so far there are no complications. Igor has no fever, but the engraftment has not yet taken place; the doctors expect this may happen by the fourth week following the transplantation. Six vials of Proleukin (77 039.42 roubles) were bought for Igor.

25.02.2002 The children of the staff of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO Geneva) collected wonderful presents for the patients of our hospital. We are so grateful to them! Beautiful dolls, books, and development games are handed as birthday presents and bring much joy to the children exhausted by their diseases. We thank the parents for bringing up such kind-hearted kids, responsive to other people's suffering.

21.02.2002 ABT Medicals Co. and Beckman Coulter Co. donated TV sets with video tape recorders for children from the Oncohematology Ward. This present is especially valuable for this ward, because the children spend all the time in their isolation wards during the treatment and never go out even into the corridor. Many thanks!

20.02.2002 Today is the sixth day since Oleg Mazilov had marrow autotransplantation. He feels quite well but had fever the day before, and therefore antibiotics were prescribed. The whole transplantation procedure is so far going as planned, without any deviations, and the process of hematopoiesis must start in the marrow in 7-10 days. But the main thing is that Oleg is in very good spirits and full of optimism.

Dear friends!
We want to ask for your help in one problem, which is very important for the little patients.
Many children have to spend several years at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital. Some of them are waiting for a kidney donor and regularly go through the painful procedure of hemodialysis (artificial kidney), some have prolonged courses of chemotherapy. Their ward becomes their second home for a long time. There are very few amusements available at the hospital, and a TV set is one of these few. Unfortunately, the television fails to work well at the hospital. One can see virtually nothing at the screen but ripples and bands. Only one channel functions well. And, of course, it would be wonderful if the children could watch different channels with a good quality of the picture. In such conditions, TV is one of the few ways to distract and amuse children during their treatment, if not the only way.
We sincerely hope you will make charitable contributions for the gravely ill children from the RCCH and help in providing the hospital wards with equipment for good reception of TV signals. Unfortunately, we don't know how much it may cost, and would be glad to receive any information. We will be very grateful if you manage to provide any help and bring much joy to the children.

14.02.02 Evgeniya Zheleznova, 2 years 8 months. Relapse of medulloblastoma. Control over the efficiency of treatment, search for metastases. 5900 roubles.

14.2.2002 Six vials of immunoglobulin Octagam (23359.56 roubles) were bought for Alesha Pavlov. He has not visited the ward for a long time; therefore, for the time being we remove his photograph from the first page of this site, and the medicine will wait for him at the hospital.

Andrei and his wife bought 2 vials of Ambisome (500 USD) for Olesya Andreeva, who is now in a critical condition. Danila and his friends bought ten more vials of Ambisome for Olesya. Now Olesya's life is hanging by a thread. Please help her soul and body by praying for her. She believes in your prayers.

Yulia Solomonovna and her friends bought Albumin (200 USD) for the Oncohematology Ward and donated 150 USD as a financial aid for Serezha Papkov's mother.

Two packs of a special nutrition Nutridrink (1190.52 roubles) were bought for Vova Beskrovnyi, a former patient of the Oncology Ward, who is now under treatment at the Gastroenterology Department.

For HLA typing of the Orlov family at the Immunology Institute, 3440.96 roubles was paid.

Aprostan for 6451.28 roubles was bought for Pasha Volchkov, 2 y.o.

Eight packs of Orungal (9590.32 roubles) were bought for Maxim Vasiliev, 12 y.o., from the Department of Medical Genetics.

8.2.2002 Billcards Webmasters Team Co. transferred 2000 USD for treatment of children from the Department of Medical Genetics.

5.2.2002 I, Tatiana Alekseevna Karnaukhova, asked you to help us buy imported immunoglobulin for my son Andrei. I am whole-heartedly grateful to all the kind people who responded to my plea and assisted in buying this medicine. After it was administered, Andrei's condition improved, he tolerated an operation (removal of gallbladder stone) quite well and was discharged from the Russian Clinical Children's Hospital in August 2001.
In September, all our family had a great joy: Andrei went to school again, after a year's absence. He attends both a general educational school and a musical one, where he plays the accordion. Again many thanks to everybody who helped buy the immunoglobulin for my son!

For enzyme Superscript required for PCR diagnostics of leukemia, 8640 roubles was paid.

An anonymous contributor paid 11500 roubles for NMR tomography of children from the Oncohematology Ward: Sasha Melnikov, Alla Borisenko, and Sasha Kosovich.

1.2.2002 Sergei bought 20 vials of Aminosteril, Diflucan (intravenous and capsules), Zovirax, Orungal (total 28491.94 roubles), and 12 vials of Proleukin for Oleg Mazilov. Now all the medicines have been purchased, and Oleg's transplantation will take place on February 5.

31.1.2002 The Health Ministry of the Russian Federation has purchased Roferon and Gleevec, the medicines necessary for Serezha Papkov's treatment. So we are no longer raising funds for buying these medicines. Serezha will soon come to Moscow with his mother and receive the necessary treatment.
The money collected for him will be used to pay for the necessary tests and to provide financial help to his parents.

30.1.2002 Disinfectants and expendables for 11852 roubles were bought for the Marrow Transplantation Ward.
Expendables for 3634.40 roubles were bought for the Kidney Transplantation Ward.

29.1.2002 Kristina Kupreeva and Margarita, her donor sister, three years after the transplantation: Photograph 1, Photograph 2.

25.1.2002 Oleg Mazilov will have marrow transplantation in the General Hematology Department rather than in the Marrow Transplantation Ward. Therefore he will occupy a special room intended for marrow autotransplantation to patients with myeloid leukemia. The room is equipped with a laminar flow air purification system (Pelican), which protects the child from various infections and makes it possible to perform successful autotransplantations. The first of such transplantations in our hospital was successfully performed in July 2001; the present attempt is the second one.
Thanks to donations by V.G. Andreev and Rustam, expendables (30122.20 roubles) were bought for Oleg's transplantation. Nadezhda Petrovna and her friends bought 15 vials of Meronem, Zovirax, leukocyte filters, and droppers (45750 roubles) for Oleg.

4.01.2002 Dear friends!
We want to thank everybody who helped us prepare the New Year celebration at the hospital. Many people and organizations responded to our request for help, and thanks to them we managed to arrange a very special holiday on December 29. We are very grateful to:
Vladislav and Tatiana, Transneft Co., Billcards Webmasters Team Co., Euroservice Co., Vadim and his friends, two Annas, TamoSoft Inc., yet another Anna, BKC Int. House, Olga and employees of the World Meteorological Organization, Masha and Irina, Gilead Sciences Co., Office Premier Co., Elena and Sergei and employees of ABN-Amro Bank, Vladimir and "olddisco friends," Svetlana, Ilia and his actor friends, Roman Fokin, Vladimir Zaviktorin, the parish of the Church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, and many, many others.
We always concentrate on organizing each New Year celebration. We believe that joy, all kinds of contests, games and presents not only amuse the sick children but also have some kind of a therapeutic effect. A feeling of joy and animation may make a child feel better, and a good psychological mood may improve his or her condition. And so we try to prepare individual presents for all children with the most serious diseases, to give them just what they want, and to make the performance especially spectacular and unforgettable.
We managed to do it this year with your help. All the children that remained in the hospital for the New Year holidays received fantastic presents from six Grandfather Frosts with Snow Maidens. "Amateur" Grandfather Frosts came to the hospital along with real professionals: actors working on TV, at the Taganka Theater and the Benefit Theater. All of them did everything to amuse the children and aroused much laughing, joy, and merriment. They arranged contests, riddles, funny and interesting games, round dances, and children participated in all this in spite of their droppers.
In the departments with the most gravely ill patients, there were not only Grandfather Frosts but also circus actors: clowns, conjurers, jugglers, animal trainers. The circus evoke enormous enthusiasm. All the children, parents, doctors, and even professors were literally enraptured by the performance. The man playing a street-organ, with a speckled hen on his shoulder and a small puppet show, made the greatest impression. Four dogs showed various circus tricks, and a dachshund pulled a cart with cats.
We are really pleased that so many people participated in this celebration.
This is the most pleasant part of our work, which, among other things (and maybe above all), has a deep meaning: to raise the spirits of the children in their unbelievably hard situation.
God bless you!

3.01.2002 Delta Co. bought 24 vials (120 g) of Immunoglobulin Vigam for Lena Merzlyakova and other children from the Immunology Ward for 152 643 roubles.

Olesya Andreeva is in a good condition: she has a normal temperature, no pain, but the main thing is that leukocytes have reappeared (0.6), which means that the transplanted bone marrow has started functioning. The graft vs. host reaction, which started to develop before the New Year holidays, is currently controlled with medicines.

The money received from the AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI organization and collected at the cognac auction was used to buy two fume hoods (to be used for dilution of chemotherapy drugs) for the Oncohematology Ward for 95 852 roubles.

Dmitry donated 600$ for Igor Abramov from the Oncohematology Ward, who is to undergo marrow transplantation.

25.12.2001 Money for Daniil Poddubny, a boy from the Crimean Republican Children's Hospital (Ukraine), has been received on our account. According to his mother's request, Sandimmune Neoral for 22 416.78 roubles was bought for Daniil.

24.12.2001 20 vials of Ambisome (132 000 roubles) were bought for Margarita Turchina from the General Hematology Ward.

Olesya Andreeva had a marrow transplantation from her brother. Her condition is not quite good so far, since there are signs of a graft vs. host reaction. The doctors ask everybody to help in purchasing 7 vials of Ambisome, a medicine Olesya greatly needs now. One vial costs 220 USD.

Diflucan for 4889.30 roubles for bought for Danila Perepelkin.

23.12.2001 Billcards Webmasters Team Co. donated 2000 USD for New Year presents to the children.

19.12.2001 Karina Prosveshchenskaia was discharged from hospital in a good condition and went home.

Jebrael Muzhahoev also leaves hospital today, but so far he must live in a boarding house attached to the hospital and be under observation in the Marrow Transplantation Section.

18.12.2001 We have very sad news. We are no longer raising funds for Alesha Strogov's treatment. He has a relapse of leukemia, transplantation is impossible now, and Alesha's parents decided to go home and try to treat him with folk remedies.

Diflucan for 5827.08 roubles was bought for Maxim Eremeev from the Oncohematology Department.

14.12.2001 A young Italian couple, Giorgio and Sabrina, got married on September 15 in the beautiful Sun Valley (Alps, Northern Italy). They decided to donate 1150$ via AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI, an Italian charity association. They asked their friends and relatives to bring money to their wedding instead of presents and thus collected 1150$. Many thanks to them!

The Italian charity association AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI also transferred an additional sum of 850$. As a result, the total sum received from AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI in December is 2000$.

13.12.2001 Billcards Webmasters Team Co. donated 3500$ for the Department of Medical Genetics. As the doctors of this department asked, this money will be used to buy medicines for another course of treatment for two 15-year-olds - Nastya Toropchina and Kolya Martynov.

07.12.2001 Eighteen packs of Zovirax (12401.10 roubles) were bought for Natasha Platonova from the Marrow Transplantation Section.

Disinfectants for 4400 roubles were bought for the Marrow Transplantation Section.

On October 26, 2001, the Pushkin Museum hosted a charity auction of cognacs to benefit patients of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital. In a huge room with a glass dome, on tables draped with fabrics and flowers, famous French cognacs were lying in antique cases. Monsieur Guy Leroux, head of a well-known French family and a long-time producer of the highest-quality cognacs, and his wife donated part of their cognac collection to benefit the seriously ill patients from RCCH. The auction was arranged by the Veld-21 company and held under the patronage of the French Embassy in Moscow. The Concillor on Social Problems, Dr. Ivan Andreevich Cheryachukin, made the opening speech. He called this auction the engagement gift of the two great countries striving to help the suffering children. The next speech was delivered by Father George Chistyakov, the senior priest of the hospital church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin. Father George said that helping the sick and the destitute has always been the common cause, both before the October Revolution and now. He highly praised the work of brilliant specialists from the RCCH and added that their work would be more difficult without sponsorship.

After that, the charity dinner and the auction took place. Part of the lots were sold. In addition, the old friends of the Children's Hospital made generous contributions in favor of the children. But both the auction and the dinner would be meaningless if real children's destinies were not beyond them, as Prof. Alexei Maschan, a hematologist from the RCCH, said.

After covering part of the organizing expenses, Veld-21 Co. transferred 469950 roubles to the Foundation's account for treating the children. This money will be used to buy medicines and expandables for children from the Oncohematology Ward and Marrow Transplantation Section.

4.12.2001 Nastya Burtseva died yesterday, on December 3, at 4 a.m. Unfortunately, although the girl's parents and doctors set so much hope on marrow transplantation, it was not successful. Nobody is to blame, since marrow transplantation is always a great risk for a patient's life, and this operation is always done as the last hope. Nastya's parents understood this, fully supported the doctors, and never, till the last moment, abandoned the belief that their girl could be saved. Nastya's mother and father are marvellous people; they supported each other with great love and tenderness all this time. It is very painful that this wondeful family has to go through the terrible grief of child loss for the second time. Nastya was just a little kid when she died, only beginning to walk and speak. But still one could imagine the kind of person she could become: cheerful, merry, curious. We are deeply grieved that the this child's life ended so early. Nastya suffered very much during her last days, and we believe that there is neither pain nor horror in the place where she is now. We remember Nastya and pray for her.

30.11.2001 I, the mother of Zhenya Khovansky, the boy suffering from primary immunodeficiency and chronic granulomatous disease, whole-heartedly thank all people that have responded to my request. Now we can hope again. When I see my boy's eyes and smile, I always thank God for the existence of people who are not indifferent to my and my son's destiny. No words can express all my gratitude.
May God help you.
Thank you,
Galina Viktorovna Khovanskaya

29.11.2001 Dear friends,
It is the third New Year we celebrate together with you. And, just as ever, we are asking you to help us with the presents, because only children with the most serious diseases cannot celebrate this merry holiday at home. For them, living within hospital walls at the outskirts of Moscow, it is very important to have a chance to forget where they are, to be distracted from their diseases and from their hard circumstances, if only for the New Year celebration. So we want to arrange a real merry holiday, with gifts and performances. And they will see their life in a different light, because merriment and gifts inspire hopes for recovery. We are very grateful for your help in arranging the previous New Year celebration, and we hope you will not leave our children now. We only repeat that the presents are intended for sick children, and so the toys and games must be new.

For the PCR diagnostics of children from all hematological departments, 7920 roubles was paid.

For laboratory tests of the Kidney Ward patients, 13936.44 was paid.

The money sent by the AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI organization was used to buy Holoxan (47870.3 roubles) for children from the Oncohematology Ward.

Elena Vladimirovna Skorobogatova, head of the Marrow Transplantation Section, told us about the children that are now patients of her section. Karina Prosveshchenskaya was in a very serious condition, her life was in danger, but fortunately the crisis ended, and rapid recovery began. The doctors believe she is in good health and have started to prepare her for leaving the hospital. Next week, Karina will start taking Proleukin that was bought for her.

Andrei Shkuratov and Jebrael Muzhahoev also feel well; Ahmet Tsoroev left the hospital in a good condition. For the time being, he should spend several months in Moscow under medical observation.

But Nastya Burtseva is in a critical condition. She felt slightly better, but then her condition became worse again, and this tendency continues. Please pray for Nastya.

28.11.2001 A young Italian couple, Andrea and Maria Rosaria from Florence, got married at the Church of St. Nicholas (Russian Orthodox Church, Constantinople Patriarchy) on October 14. They decided to donate 1500$ via AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI, an Italian charity association. They asked their friends and relatives to give them money instead of wedding presents, and so they managed to collect 1500$. We are very grateful to them.

AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI, the Italian charity association, transferred 500$ in addition to this sum. So, the total sum transferred by this organization in November is 2000$.

20.11.2001 Jebrael Muzhahoev underwent marrow transplantation on Thursday, November 15. His condition is satisfactory so far.

13.11.2001 The money received from the AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI association (17168.10 roubles) was used to buy expendables for all children from the Oncohematology Ward.

12.11.2001 Nastya Burtseva is in a poor condition because of a marked graft vs. host reaction with lesion of liver and intestines. Nastya has developed severe jaundice, does not eat anything and has constant fever. Her kidneys are also affected. The situation is very serious and life-threatening.

30.10.2001 Andrusha Shkuratov was quite poorly. Following intensive treatment, he developed a toxic poisoning of lever and kidneys with subsequent severe deficiency of these organs which threatened his life. However, his condition is improving now. Ansdrusha's fever has eased off, and most importantly, his marrow transplant has recovered. He also has leukcoites which means that the organism still has good reserves for fighting the disease.

Nastya Burtseva is showing signs of transplant taking in. Although this process is accompanied by the "transplant against host" syndrome and therefore her condition is still critical. However, it is not getting worse.

16.10.2001 Vera donated $50 to buy pampers for Nastya Vorobyova - she is only 5 weeks' old and is currently undergoing treatment in the marrow transplant ward.

12.10.2001 Out of the money raised by the "AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI" organisation, $1700 was used to buy sterile gloves for the oncohaemotology ward and $300 - to buy Albumin for the same ward.

5.10.2001 Dr Evgeny Pashanov told us about Misha Zelenkov. Misha is suffering from a severe autoimmune disease called a system red volchanka. Misha has been ill for many years now and, unfortunately, is nor responding to standard medical treatment, i.e. the one using hormonal and immunosuppressive therapies. Therefore the doctors suggested a unique methods of treatment which has never before been tested in Russia, with only a few cases of this treatment being practices in the world. The process is quite long and traumatic. First a maximum dose of immunosupression (using Cyclophosphan + ATG) is administered to suppress the initial cause of disease. Then, once the organism starts recovery, the stem cells will be extracted. These cells will then be freed from lymphacytes which casue the disease and the put back to Misha, i.e. an autotransplantation operation will be carried out.

2.10.2001 "AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI", an Italian charity organisation, transferred another US $2000 for treatment of children.

13.09.2001 Dear Friends
We wanted to express our condolences to the American people and, in particular, to the families of victims of the horrendous attack of 11 September 2001. We grieve together with you and pray for you. Our children received lots of invaluable help from people in America. Lots of children's lives were saved due to this help.
It seems like yesterday when our friends and benefactors from the USA were genuinely worried about the health of children in our hospital. They treated these children as if they were their own. And today we want to say - we were deeply shocked by your tragedy and your lives and well-being is very important to us. We are very worried about you and want to know you are all right. Please send us a line and tell us you are OK.
It is almost impossible to comprehend the scale of this tragedy and to know and thousands of people fell victims of terrorists. What happened in America shows how vulnerable our world is and how close we all are to catastrophy. We all felt the horrible power evil which is almost impossible to resist. It is clear that a new mechanism of evil was put into action and the effects of this are far stretching. The only thing we can to resist this evil is to be strong in our togetherness trying to do everything we can to preserve kindness, compassion and faith in our hearts.

12.09.2001 AIUTATECI A SALVARE I BAMBINI, an Italian charity, transferred US $1000 for the children of oncohaemothology ward. The money was spent to buy spare materials.

31.07.01 Dear friends!
We have some good news to share with you. Julia Bessonova, one of the first to appear on our site, has just entered the Moscow Teaching University to study Foreign Languages. What a change from the first time Julia's name appeared - when with your help we bought her a disabled person motor-chair which made quite a difference to Julia since she wasn't confined to her room any more. Julia worked really hard, attended preparatory courses and here is the first big breakthrough! We are sure there will be more ahead. Julia's energy, determination, intelligence and optimism will help her conquer anything. Well done, Julia! We wish you all the success in the future.

30.07.01 Jura Nazimkin, a little boy who is undergoing treatment of a fatal trombocytonic purpur disease, is bought a prosthetic appliance by OTTO BOCH worth 55822,27 Rubles. Despite the difficult treatment he is undergoing, Jura grew into a lively boy and led a normal life - played with his friends, went cycling. Once, while out cycling with friends not far from a railway line, Jura's leg was hit by a passing train. His leg had to be amputated. Using the money donated for all children's needs and also donations from Denis, Dmitry, Vyacheslav and Yevgeny the necessary sum was raised to buy Jura a good artificial leg.

Denis ourchased 10 bottles of Ambizom worth US $2200 for Vanya Tsukanov, 6, who has been undergoing treatment in oncogaemotology ward. Vanya is now in a critical state and is transferred to reanimation ward.

9.07.01 Andrey donated US $3000 to buy medicine. This sum, as well as other transfers, were used to buy 25 bottles (5 g) of immunoglobullin for all the patients of the ward ( a total of US $5000).

Alyosha Lobanov arrived to Moscow and undergone another operation in Bakulev Institute on 26th of June. A large underskin vein was moved to his abdomen and we expect the lymph to discard into the vein system. The doctors hope that as a result Alyosha will not suffer from swollenness. However, more operations might be required in the future. Alyosha constantly needs special nutrition and he was recently bought some medical nourishment Nutrizon wirth 10230 Rubles.

3.07.01 Following an article about Vasya Marchenko, one of our patients, published in a "Kommersant" paper on 8 June 2001, we had such an enormous response from benefactors that the amount raised was enough to help other children in our hospital as well, including Nastya Burtseva and Misha Zelenkov. A sufficient sum was raised to pay for a marrow transplant delivery from England. Money for medicine was raised with the help of our site. As soon as the marrow transplant is delivered, Nastya will be placed in the marrow transplant ward. With your help we had raised US $6230 for Misha Zelenkov, and the rest was raised from response from Kommersant. Misha will undergo a gaploidentical transplant, i.e. his mum's marrow will be used as a donor's but it will have to be cleansed of unwanted components using a special tool. There was no such tool available in Russia before and we had to send it abroad. Recently one of our benefactors acquired this tool for our hospital and Misha will be the first patient to undergo this operation without sending the marrow abroad. The operation will take place as soon as the machine is delivered and installed in the hospital.

Sonya Pastukhova came to the hospital for tests. It went fine, and she is getting ready to start school. Sonya's mum wrote a letter to all those who helped her daughter:
Thank you very much to all those who helped to save my little girl's life. I cannot express in words all my gratitude to all those who replied to our plea for help. Thank Goodness, Sofia is fine now - she became her usual merry and restless self. Just like before her illness, she now goes for walks, runs and jumps around and is as energetic as ever. Sonya is getting ready to start school this autumn and so she now reads all her favourite books and writes letters to her mum. Sonya asked me to say hello and thank you to everyone who e-mailed her. We all say - thank you so much!

Infusomats worth 102170 Rubles were bought for the oncogaemtology and marrow transplant wards. These apparatus are vital for modern treatment of cancer patients. Infusmoats provide the precise chemotherapy doze while protecting the child's mucous membrane from burns. When these apparatus are in short supply, the children's parents have to spend several days, 24 hours a day, at their child's bedside manually counting every drop of medicine administered.

A medical nutrition Nutrizon worth 3502,20 Rubles was purchased for Seryozha Zhuravlev from microsurgery ward.

7780,50 Rubles worth of catheters were bought for the children of kidney transplant ward.

2.07.01 Dear friends,
We would like to let you know that our patients from kidney transplant ward recently produced two cartoons! Some of these children spend as much as 6 months, and even some years in the hospital. They are all undergoing haemodialysis - a very painful but necessary treatment. And while going thorough this very painful procedure, they managed to put together and animate two wonderful cartoons! One of them is "A Christmas Song" and the other is "Prophet" (by Pushkin). The first cartoon is full of light and happiness. The other one is more restrained and serious. We hope you will enjoy watching these cartoons and see again that even a serious disease cannot stop our children being creative!

29.06.01 The Voskresensky parish from Zurich transferred US $703.07 to pay for all children's treatment.

27.06.01 Dima Krajnuchenko is still undergoing treatment in Holland. Finally a long period of remission is over and he is feeling better. Dima takes Infleximab which made him gain some weight - he now weights 40 kg although he is only liquid fed. Not only is he walking but even cycling. His operation is scheduled for mid-July.

US $1000 was donated by Evgenija Kantonistova for the needs of oncogaemotology ward. The money was spent to buy disposal material (gloves, 50 ml syringes, etc) for all the children. Desinfection materials worth US $120 were bought by Irina, Olga, Natasha and Ekaterina from California.

16.06.01 Andrey Paladiev has undergone a marrow transplant operation which went very well, almost without any complications. Andrey and Kostya Mitko are already going out for walks outside (although still wearing masks) and even try to play table tennis! Andrey's tests are good and we expect him to be released out of the ward within the next couple of days. Andrey's mum write this note:
Thank you so much to all of you who helped with my son Andrey's treatment. Thank Goodness, Andrey is feeling well after the operation, he is eating well and started going for walks. His tests are fine and we hope he will be home soon. My children and I will always remember your generosity and kindness. Antonina Paladieva.

Yury donated 3000 Rubles to buy medicine.

15.6.01 We would like to address all those benefactors who help our children. Some time ago we signed an agreement with Platinum Bank which allows you to transfer money by credit cards using the Cyberplat system. We did this following numerous requests from our correspondents who found it easier to donate money this way. The system worked fine and we are very grateful to the bank and its staff, as well as, obviously, all those who transferred money this way to help the sick children.

However, an extremely worrying and unpleasant accident has occurred quite recently. We were very disturbed when we learnt about it. What happened was that 6 people who had previously transferred money to our hospital, decided to recall the transfer. It is allowed by international regulations as long as a transfer is no older than 6 months. Here are the names of people who cancelled their donations: Andrea Costa, Stephen Mann, James Brammer, Gunther Ruehl, Roy Meres, Gina Sharp. (Continued)

The sum involved in this unfortunate "recall" is quite considerable - 69621.41 Rubles. As soon as the bank informed us about this cancellation, we tried to get in touch with these people to find out what made them do this and perhaps explain that by doing this they were virtually cancelling the children's treatment depriving them of their chance to recover. However, to our greatest shock, it turned out that all these translation were carried our using false address and names!

If any of the above mentioned are reading this, we would like to explain that once the money were transferred to the hospital's account, they were immediately used to buy medicine for our children and these are usually administered within the next couple of days We cannot possibly cancel it! Therefore, in order to refund the money which had been recalled, the Platinum Bank and Cyberplat had to deduct the amount from incoming donations which were addressed to other children. The result of this monetary manipulation was that children's life was at risk. (Continued)

If anyone willingly or unwillingly involved in this accident is reading this, we would like you to think again of what has been done. We are talking about children's life and death here and this is not the place to play games - charity or otherwise!

8.06.01 Dmitry donated US $500 to buy medicine for the children.

7.6.01 Tamosoft, a Cypriot company, donated US $500 to pay for tests carried out at kidney and oncogaemotology wards.

26.5.01 Dear friends,
Kostya Mitko is feeling better now - he already goes for walks and his blood test results seem reasonable, apart from thrombocyte which are still a bit low so Kostya has to have blood transmissions every other day. The doctors are planning to release Kostya from his current ward and move him into a hospital sanatorium where he would continue to recover. We are very grateful to our new friends from Province, in the south of France. Lorance is a mother of three and she organised a group which gathers to pray for the children from our hospital. She wrote in one of her letters that when Kostya felt particularly poorly and he suffered badly, she prayed for him as of he was her own son. We admire her kindness, compassion and energy. Lorance and her friends are going to help Kostya's mum in buying all the necessary post-operation medicine. We are grateful to Lorance and her group, as well as all the others who helped to provide all the necessary medicine, who prayed for Kostya's health and helped him.
God bless you.

16.05.01 Dear friends,
We would like to thank you all for your continuous help for Nastya Burtseva. Recently the doctors doubted whether it would be possible to carry out a marrow transplant operation for Nastya. The reason for that is that a lot of problems to do with marrow cleansing occurred in Buelorussia. First, the cleansing machine broke down, then some problems with documents, etc, etc. All this time the doctors here were trying to find a non-related donor for Nastya. Recently a donor cord blood (the best source of marrow cells) was sourced in London and it is now being obtained. This procedure costs US $17,000. We now have to raise the money not only for the medicine but also for marrow delivery here. We are hopeful that The Ministry of Health would pay for this on Rubles and therefore a sum of US $7,000 (in Rubles) should be transferred to the Ministry of Health account. Due to your help we have already raised 28658 Rubles and US $8,500. On behalf of Nastya's parents, doctors, out group Milsoerdije, we ask you to help us to raise the remaining sum and give Nastya a chance to live.

10.5.01 The Tula Regional Health Authority has assigned funds for peritonitial dialysis for Maxim Maximov. He will now live at home and have treatment there up until such time as when a kidney transplant operation could be performed. We are very grateful to all those who helped Maxim's mum through this difficult time, as well as those benefactors who helped to buy all the necessary medicine and thus saved the boy's life. We are also grateful to those of you who helped Natasha to rebuild her house.

6.05.01 Ten more bottles of Ambizom was bought for Kostya by Andrey. Kostya is feeling a bit better today, his temperature is slightly down and there are leucocyte in his blood (1,2) which means that his brother's donor marrow transplant is taking.

6.05.01 Dear friends,
We would like to share our wonderful news with you. In fact, it's more of a miracle. Do you remember Vova Leskov, a little boy who was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of aplastical anaemia? Once we put the information about Vova on this site, someone came forward to cover all the expenses for his treatment. This treatment proved to be very long and difficult and Vova didn't response to it for some time. Our doctors were leading a continuous battle to save the boy's life which could have been cut short at any time by any infection. However, Vova's benefactor was always there to buy all the necessary medicine like Neipogen and others. We are deeply grateful to this wonderful person and admire his kindness, patience and unbreakable belief in Vova's eventual recovery which has now paid off - Vova has virtually recovered! He was recently dismissed from the hospital and is now adjusting to his new life of a healthy boy. Vova arrived at the hospital when he was just 5 - he almost forgot his home, his grandmum and sister. He will now have to rediscover all this again. We wholeheartedly wish Vova, as well as his mum Zhenya, all the very best and want to say our sincere thank you to Vova's saviour.

4.05.01 Kostya Mitko is in a critical state at the moment, his temperature is above 40C. The donor marrow hasn't started taking yet and so his body cannot fight the infections - whether it's bacterial, viral or any other. The result of this is a developing sepsis. To fight the infections, we need to buy some very expensive medicine. Over the last few days we bought 10 bottles of Ambizom (worth US $2200) and Zovirax. However, we will have run out of Ambizom by tomorrow and are asking for your help. Kostya needs three bottles of Ambizom a day while one bottle costs $220. Please help Kostya's mum to buy this medicine.

He was also accompanied by Tanya and Volodya who played the flute and a clown who came to entertain. The conference hall where the concert took place was absolutely packed and the audience was very happy indeed. Joining in with Sergey were the doctors, the children and their parents. The New Year's Eve was celebrated in the hospital on 30th of December and our children were receiving presents from all over the world: from parishioners of Kosma and Demyan church in Moscow, from parishioners of the church of Our Lady of Kazan in New York (senior priest Father Leonid Kishkovsky), from a Moscow-based Office-Premier firm, from the Irish firm ORACLE (Director - Nicky Sheridan), from Veronica in Krasnodar and Anya in St Petersburg, from Vladimir, Danila, Marina, Anya, Alexander Sergeevich, Svetlana and Mark, from all the pupils of the College XXI private school, and many many others. The firm Euroservice donated a big TV to the children of Oncology Ward. Every child received his own present and some ice cream. Four Father Frosts and Snow Maidens were giving out the presents. The children were signing songs and reciting poems to get their special prizes. Later they played games, solved puzzles and danced. Those who couldn't get out of bed and therefore couldn't attend the party were visited by Father Frost in their wards. We were also visited by a Children's Circus. The clowns introduced the actors. One of them was dressed in a bearskin and played two bears at once. He amused everyone by performing excellent somersaults and dances. The other one was conjuring tricks. All the children really enjoyed their performance. But they were especially delighted by a New Year's Eve waltz, which was performed, by a girl and a boy dressed in ball dancing gowns. We are very grateful to all those who helped us make this a very special day for our children. Happy New Year to all of you, Happy New Century, Happy New Millennium!

We haven't heard anything from Pavel Chupira's parents for over 6 months now and therefore don't know what's happening with Pavel. Due to this uncertainty and until we have some information about him, we have to temporarily stop raising money for Pavel.

The money raised to pay for the donor marrow transplant for Katya Kiselyova -the operation could not be carried out due to bureaucratic problems to do with marrow delivery to Russia - were spent to carry out a similar allogen transplant for Asida Tanje, a 15-year old girl from Abkhasia. The transplanted marrow is already functioning although the tests show low thrombocytes. Asida is already released from hospital but she is still in Moscow since she requires constant medical supervision until she stops taking prednizlone. The doctors are now working on establishing the exact dose of Cyclosporine A which she will be taking for the next two years.

Dear Friends,
It was more then a month before Christmas when we had this wonderful first Christmas experience. What happened was that a family was planning a birthday party for their son. They warned all their friends and their children who were going to come to the party that their son decided to donate all his presents to the two little patients of the Children's Hospital. As a result of this very mature decision, over US$ 2,000 was raised - a considerable sum which was vital for the well-being of Oksana Timoshenko and "little" Alyona Vlasova who are currently undergoing a peritonial dialysis. Now: a yound man's name is Misha and it was his first birthday! Dear Misha's friends, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity, compassion and kindness. Please accept and pass our best wishes to the coming Christmas and New Year to your little boy!

The New Year's Eve, this favourite holiday of all the children, is just around the corner. Our little pateints, just like any other children, are very much looking forward to it. It goes without saying that they would much rather meet the New Year in the company of their families, friends, brothers and sisters and most of our children will indeed go home. However, those who are critically ill will naturally have to stay in the Hospital and we are determined to do our absolute best to make sure that they forget their pain and sufferings at least for one day. We would like everyone to join us again this year and help us collect some nice presents for these children - just like so many of you did last year and we very much hope that you will not forget our children this time.
You can buy these presents yourself. Our little girls are very fond of embroidery sets (frames, boarders, coloured threads), boys prefer little toy cars. All the children enjoy games like puzzles, playstation cartridges (please choose the cheerful, not the gloomy ones!), soft toys, photo albums, various board games like Monopoly, Manager, etc. Having said that - please feel free to use your imagination. One word of warning though: our children are quite ill and therefore we don't want them to have old, used toys. We are also looking for volunteers to act as Father Frost and Snow Maiden at our New Year Party which will take place in the Hospital.

It is now fully operational and 10-15 children are being treated every day.

The morning of March 7th, Sasha Shevchenko died. He was 9 years old. He fell ill with leikosis in 1994. It was then that he was admitted to our hospital. Doctors were able to achieve remission, and Sasha lived at home for several years. But the disease came back in 1998. The only chance to save Sasha was a bone marrow transplant. It was done in June 1999. Doctors knew that Sasha's chances were not great, but they did everything possible so that he could get well. A miracle did not happen. Sasha died not from leikosis but from a complication from the bone marrow transplant. For all of us it is a great loss because we knew Sasha since the time he was very little. We very much loved him and his mother Galya, his father Andrey and his twin sister Ksyusha.

22.02.00 Morning of 21st of February, Maksim Mikhailov died. He was 14 years old, he came to the hospital from the city of Chita with the diagnosis of aplastic anemia of a super difficult degree. He was going to undergo the therapy that is usually prescribed in cases like this, but unexpectedly, it was discovered that he became infected with fungal scepsis. All who suffer from aplastic anemia have their immune systems severely weakened, and that is why they can die from microogranisms harmless for a healthy human. To cure this fungal infection one needs tremendous amount of money, but at that moment, God sent a man who bought all the necessary drugs for Maksim. It is because of this that there was no necessity to make a page for Maksim on our site.
At all times we were hoping that Maksim can be cured. Doctors thought that Maksim has a change of getting well.

Maksim's condition was very difficult. He was suffering from hemorrhages, his lungs would refuse to work, but in spite of that, Maksim believed that he would not die, until the very last day he would not lose his interest in life and the world around him. When he was especially sick, his Dad would read him a soccer magazine, and Maksim would start to feel a little bit better. Maksim was a bright and well-read boy. He studied English and Chinese, wanted to become a historian...
Dear friends!
Every death of a very ill child, for whom we all assume responsibility, raises the question about the expediency of these tremendous nervous and financial expenditures. This question is not an empty one, and the only thing that we can tell ourselves is , we cannot not do it. A human being on the edge of life and death must not feel abandoned. Also, many parents told us that they were morally supported by the knowledge that everything possible was being done for their child. This is why we are going to continue this work, and hope you will support us.
