This tragedy happened to our son Dima Filippov on June 14, 1994, when he was
six. His head accidentally contacted a low-hanging power transmission line
at the voltage 10 kV, and he suffered terrible injuries. He literally hung
in a fireball; only one small hand was visible. In several seconds, the
fireball broke away, slowly floated down, and hung on the railing of the
transmission tower. The current went through Dima's head and whole body,
leaving horrible traces. Dima had third- and fourth-degree burns. His skull
burned through, up to the meninges; his face, neck, thighs, and forearms
were also severely burnt. The boy went through shock and several clinical
deaths, then spent a very long time in the resuscitation department. The
doctors struggled for his life for six months, and Dima also struggled with
every cell of his little body. And he was lucky to survive, thanks to God's
will and the doctors' efforts. We are eternally grateful to them! After a
whole series of operations, he had to learn to sit, stand, and walk again...
Three months after the trauma, Dima went blind. Five operations helped him
regain 50% of his eyesight.
In spite of all Dima went through, he is keen on studying, wants to live
a full life, although it is very difficult for him, since he has to study
at home because of his injuries. But still he does study and dreams of
becoming a doctor and helping all the sick people. And we think he is a
born doctor.
We, his parents, heartily hope that our boy will grow up and receive a good
education in order to become a specialist. But we cannot cope without your
help, help provided by all kind and sympathetic people, because Dima has to
undergo an expensive multistage treatment. Presently he needs implantation
of two expanders for stretching the skin on his head. Each expander costs
550$. Maybe some kind people will help us find the money to pay for these
expanders. We hope for your assistance and support.
Yours respectfully,
Dima Filippov and his parents
