My daughter Katya is 1.5 years old. She is a merry and active girl, who likes
to play with other children, although she cannot yet walk owing to congenital hip dislocation.
She has spent a long time in plaster, and now her both legs are in special splints.
But some time ago we learned that she has a much worse diagnosis: mucopolysaccharidosis
typ 1 (Hurler's syndrome). Children with such a disease seldom live more than six years.
My husband left us after he learned about Katya's illness, and I have to raise her
all by myself. She is to have bone marrow transplantation. But she is my only child, and so
there is no related donor. Search for such a donor must be performed abroad,
but this will cost such a lot: 15,000 euro! Please help us raise this sum! We have little
time, because it is highly desirable to perform this surgery before she turns two.
Yours respectfully, mother of Katya Gordeeva

The doctor's comment
On August 13, 2008, a joint meeting of specialists
at our hospital considered further therapy of patient Ekaterina (Katya) Gordeeva,
born February 5, 2007, diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis type 1 (Hurler's syndrome).
Allogeneic transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells is the only efficient method
of treating this condition. It should be performed as early as possible, before
irreversible alterations develop in the central nervous system and other organs.

4.05.2009 Katya Gordeeva
was to have her transplantation in May. However, it turned out that the potential donor
has medical contraindications, and therefore the transplantation will have to be postponed
until a new donor is found.
8.04.2009 We are completing the fundraising for the benefit of Katya Gordeeva.
We thank all who have responded and personally Sergei Bogdanov, who yesterday donated
the remaining 125,000 roubles ($3750).
19.03.2009 Bone marrow donors have been found for Yura Ponomarev
and Katya Gordeeva. Yura's transplantation is planned for the
end of April; Katya's is likely to take place in May.
Presently a total of 512,500 roubles have been raised for Katya. Given the euro/rouble rate in September,
this sum (about 15,000 euro) would be sufficient to search for an unrelated donor and to pay for graft harvesting. However,
since the euro/rouble rate has changed a great deal during the economic crisis, 200,000 roubles more
(about $5950, or 4400 euro) is needed. We have to resume fundraising for the benefit of Katya Gordeeva.
9.09.2008
We whole-heartedly thank Ilmar, who handed us the complete sum required to pay
for unrelated transplantation of bone marrow to Katya Gordeeva.
The fundraising for Katya has been completed.
