Vadim Gritchin

Vadim Gritchin, 6 years old, was born and lives in the Far North, in the city of Norilsk. He suddenly felt worse at the age of 5. There were four episodes when he had to be taken to the intensive care department, and once he was even in the state of coma. The reason for this condition was found only when he was taken to Moscow for an examination. It turned out that he had adrenoleukodystropy, a rare and terrible genetic disorder.
Vadim is my only child. Physicians in Moscow think that transplantation of donor bone marrow can save the child, since the clinical picture is not yet so severe. But there is very little time, because the disease develops too fast. Two months more - and it may already be too late even for the transplantation. There is no donor for the boy in Russia. Our only hope is to find a matching donor in an international bone marrow donor bank.
Vadim is a smart boy. He likes drawing and clay modeling. His most cherished dream is to have wings like those of a butterfly - and to become healthy. And he is afraid of darkness. It is terrible to think that all that awaits him without this transplantation is blindness, deafness and slow dying... Vadim urgently needs a donor! We have very little time! Please help us!

The doctor's comment

A joint meeting of specialists (July 9, 2009) at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital discussed further therapy of patient Vadim Gritchin, b. 2003, who has been diagnosed with X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy.
The only way to cure this disease is to perform allogeneic transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells as early as possible, before lesions of the central nervous system and other organs develop.
The child has no HLA-matching related donor; for this reason, search for a donor of hematopoietic stem cells should be performed in an international register.
If an HLA-matching donor is found, the patient will be urgently directed to the Department of Marrow Transplantation, Russian Children's Clinical Hospital.

Thanks to Sergei's donation, graft harvesting for Vadim Gritchin has been paid for. The transplantation will take place at the Bone Marrow Transplantation Clinic, St. Petersburg Medical University. We are grateful to everybody who has helped these kids. Let us wish them good luck!

27.08.2009 We thank our old friend Alexander, who has provided the compete sum to perform the search for an unrelated donor for Vadim Gritchin. The search in the Stefan Morsch international register of hematopoietic stem cells costs 5000 euro. About 9000 euro is still required for future graft harvesting.
