30.11.00 Yulya Konyaeva can already walk again following her operation which was carried out in Izrael. She recently visited Moscow
to attend a Paediatrics Conference and all the doctors were amazed that she started walking again after only a brief period
of replacement therapy with only small amounts of preparation administered to her. Yulya has enough medicine to carry her
through up to March 2001 and Yulya's parents hope that the budget means would allow them to buy the necessary medicine in the
future.
21.03.00 480,000 roubles were collected for treatment of Yulya Konyayeva (about $17,000). We are appealing to the
whole world for help! Our elder daughter Yulya is 14, for nine years
she has been seriously ill. She is now in the Russian Pediatric
Clinical Hospital, in the traumatology department. Yulya is diagnosed with
Gaucher's disease. This rare disease is characterized by the
degeneration of bone tissue, caused by the lack of an enzyme,
responsible for the bone system. In 1998 Yulya's condition has
rapidly deteriorated, she experiences acute pain which cannot be
relieved even with strong drugs. The girl's extremity joints are
deformed, she is constantly in cast and confined to her bed. In the
spring of 1999, Yulya had undergone two surgeries. The post-operational
period is very hard for her; more and more new focuses of the disease appear. All
efforts of doctors, surgery and pain-relievers are just palliatives for
the treatment, which could save Yulya. She needs replacement therapy with
the ceresim enzyme. This therapy costs about 80 thousand US dollars
per year. We know that Gaucher's disease is reported to be
successfully cured in Israel. We implore everyone to help our people
with necessary materials which neither the hospital nor our family
have, or to help organize for her the course of medical treatment in Israel.
Yulya's greatest wish is to walk, to run, to jump, to be joyous and
happy. We do believe in sympathy, understanding and kindness.
The Konyayev family, Rostov-na-Donu.
