Vladik Kiryukhin
20.10.2004 We have received a message from Vladik Kiryukhin's mother. He has been at home since March 2004, and so far he is OK. This is what Vladik's mother Svetlana writes:
"I, Vladik Kiryukhin's mother, want to thank everybody who provided moral and financial support during my son's treatment and recovery, including donors who gave their blood and its components to Vladik. My son had marrow transplantation on August 1, 2002, when he was 3.5 years old. The donor was his 17-year-old sister. The treatment was very long and expensive. And additional, also very expensive drugs were needed because of complications after the operation. There were people who bought these medicines for us and paid for the boy's examinations. One of the complications was osteoporosis. Because of it, my son could not move at all and remained bedridden for over a year. We are immeasurably grateful to all people who helped us buy a corset to prevent a spinal fracture. Thanks to our doctors and all the medical staff, my son gradually began to recover. He started learning to stand and walk again. The physical efforts slowly increased day after day. And finally the day came when we could go home. My son spent a year and eight months at the RCCH Departments of Marrow Transplantation and General Hematology. We have seen some of our sponsors, but still there are many whom we don't know by sight. We only know that they exist and that their help in my son's recovery was great. We have already spent more than half a year at home, and Vladik is feeling fine. He will turn six soon. He has changed a great deal: grown stronger and taller. He can also move quite well. Although he still walks in his corset, I'm sure that soon he will be able to take it off. Our family is deeply thankful to all people who helped our son and brought happiness back to our home.
Svetlana Kiryukhina"

12.03.2004 Dear friends,
we have good news. Vladik Kiryukhin is leaving the hospital this evening. He was treated for aplastic anemia and underwent marrow transplantation in August 2002. The transplantation was followed by an extremely severe graft vs. host reaction, and the boy had to receive high doses of hormones. They caused a serious osteoporosis, such that this autumn Vladik could not even lift his body on the bed. He needed platelet donors even in August 2003. But Sveta, his mother, always repeated, "Slow does not necessarily mean bad."
It was a real joy to see how Vladik first learned to rise on his elbows, then stand on his knees holding on to the back of his bed, then sit, and finally walk (first holding somebody's hand and then all by himself). Now Vladik is in good condition, and the doctors allowed him to go home. He will arrive in hospital only for control examinations.
We are grateful to doctors, donors, and all contributors who have helped the boy.

12.02.2004 Vladik Kiryukhin's condition has greatly improved. He lost some weight and started to learn walking again. So far his mother carries him in her arms and uses a wheelchair to take him out. He also likes to ride a trike along the passage of his department. The tests show good results. The doctors say that Vladik will be allowed to go home as soon as he learns to walk by himself.

25.01.2003 The whole remaining sum for Vladik Kiryukhin's corset (10,500 roubles) has been paid.

17.01.2003 K transferred 100 USD for Vladik Kiryukhin's treatment via the online credit card system.

16.01.2003 Arsenieva transferred 50 USD for Vladik Kiryukhin's treatment via the online credit card system.

15.01.2003 Roberts transferred 50 USD for Vladik Kiryukhin's treatment via the online credit card system.

14.01.2003 Kokh transferred 50 USD for Vladik Kiryukhin's treatment via the online credit card system.

14.01.2003 Chichmareva transferred 284 USD for Vladik Kiryukhin's treatment via the online credit card system.
Vladik Kiryukhin My name is Svetlana Mikhailovna Kiryukhina. This is a plea to everybody who can hear me: please help my son Vladik, who is 4 years old.
Vladik grew as a healthy child, but the trouble struck when he was 3.5 years. The doctors diagnosed acquired severe aplastic anemia. We got to the RCCH in Moscow on July 15, 2002, and Vladik had marrow transplantation on August 1. My elder daughter was the donor.
Marrow transplantation brought my boy back to life, but he had complications because of the severe treatment. He had an acute graft-versus-host disease and was treated with large doses of hormones. As a result, he developed osteoporosis of the lower cervical and lumbar parts of the spinal column. And now Vladik has to lie in bed. He cannot move freely, sit, or play. Even a slight movement causes a severe pain. Orthopedists recommend a corrective corset, which will help save the boy's spine. But making and adjusting the corset costs about 15000 roubles.
Our family cannot buy this corset. We have already spent 6 months at the hospital and now experience constant financial problems. My husband is a driver and has only a temporary job, which is sometimes available and sometimes lacking. I am not working now, and our parents cannot help us, because they receive only old-age pensions. So we are asking everybody to help us. Please relieve my boy from pain and suffering and help him return to a normal life! Please help us!
Yours respectfully,
Svetlana Mikhailovna Kiryukhina,
Magnitogorsk
