I am a father of a five-year-old son. When Slava was just a very little boy,
he was diagnosed with congenital bilateral sensoneural hearing loss. In our native city
of Voronezh, such kids can go only one way: a special boarding school for
deaf-mute children. However, we decided to go to Moscow, because we heard
that here surgeons can give a deaf child a chance to hear.
In 2006, Slava underwent a very complex surgery: cochlear implantation in his right ear.
It means that an electrode system directly stimulating the remaining acoustic nerve fibers
was implanted in the inner ear. Thanks to this operation, Slava develops just as well
as other kids of his age. He speaks better and better, but he needs to carry a speech
processor in a backpack all the time. As all boys, he likes to run and hop, but this load
prevents such playing. Besides, he already stoops his shoulders because of wearing
this backpack all the time.
Now a new-generation postaural speech processor has been designed. It not only
enables a child to move freely but also ensures much better speech and sound
recognition. This processor will make Slava just like any child of his age. He is to
go to secondary school soon, and this processor will let him go to a normal school.
The doctors recommend this appliance. However, it costs a lot: 375,000 roubles ($15,300).
We have no such money.
We are grateful to everybody who participates in fundraising for Slavik's processor!

The electronic hearing aid for Slava Pronin
has been paid for. We are grateful to all who have responded, and especially to the Sozidanie
foundation, which regularly supports our patients. Now Slava can hear everything
around him, and we hope that his further life will be successful.
