Artem Romanov

News

22.03.2007 Yesterday, at 3 a.m., Artem Romanov's heart stopped beating. During the last months, after it became clear that little Artem was in hopeless condition, his mother Elena has been dreaming only of going home with him, of staying together with him at home, if only for a few weeks. But the child's condition suddenly deteriorated, and they had to stay at hospital till the end.
Elena has no relatives at all. They were alone in the whole world. Only she and Artem.

16.01.2007 Natalia V. Myakova, Head of the Department of Oncohematology-27, tells:
Artem Romanov is presently at the intensive care unit. A huge hematoma formed under his dura mater has displaced all the brain structures. He is in the state of coma, aplasia, and without any remission of his main disease. His prognosis is dismal: 90% blast cells. Alas, marrow transplantation is no longer an issue.

16.01.2007 Unfortunately, Artem Romanov has not responded to an anti-relapse chemotherapy cycle. Stronger polychemotherapy has been prescribed.

24.12.2006 Head of the Department of Oncohematology-27 Natalia V. Myakova tells:
"As to Artem Romanov, his marrow transplantation is postponed, because the control myelogram showed up to 20% blast cells. Treatment has been started to achieve the 3rd remission. If this attempt is successful, we will consider the possibility of marrow transplantation again."

21.12.2006 The situation with Artem Romanov is extremely difficult. The boy has had a relapse. Marrow transplantation has been postponed, and intense anti-relapse therapy has been prescribed. And right now, to crown it all, Artem's mother is in critical financial situation. The family urgently needs your help!

20.10.2006 An unrelated marrow donor has been found for Artem Romanov in the Stefan Morsch registry. The transplantation will take place in the beginning of November. We thank Alexander, who has provided the remaining part of the sum for donor activation.

11.10.2006 Funds required to find an unrelated donor for Artem Romanov in the European registry have been raised during the Flag of Kindness charity event. According to preliminary matching, a potential donor has already been found.

Artem Romanov

I, Elena Romanova, want to tell you about the difficult destiny of my only son. His name is Artem, and he is 2 years 8 months old.
I am a single mother, and he is my only son. He was born when I was no longer young, because I could not have children earlier due to health problems. I longed for a son, and God gave him to me, but then our destiny became too cruel. When Artem was 11.5 months old, he fell ill. It was leukemia. My son was treated for it in our town of Sochi [a resort town on the Black Sea] for a year and two months. There were terrible complications: sepsis (twice), serious problems with the kidney, liver, heart, intestines. There were even convulsions and medicine-induced psychosis.
Artem barely syrvived, and I hoped with all my heart that everything would be over, that my son would be healthy and happy. But there was a relapse two months after the completion of the treatment. The disease was back in an even more terrible form: early relapse, neuroleukemia.
Now we are at the Department of Oncohematology of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital in Moscow. And only marrow transplantation can help us. Since Artem is my only child, the transplantation must be from a donor. An enormous sum of money is necessary to find a donor. This search will be even more difficult than it usually is, since Artem is half-Russian and half-Armenian.
I am on maternity leave now, and our only source of money is my child's disability pension, which is barely sufficient to buy just the most necessary things for daily life. There is nobody to help us. We haven't even a normal apartment, and the doctors say that our present house with stove heating is not suitable for Artem: the air should not be damp and dusty. So we will be just unable to go home, or all our efforts will be in vain. In short, there are many problems, but the most important thing now is to find a donor and to perform the transplantation. We only hope that you will help us and support us.
Search and activation of an unrelated donor cost 15,000 euro.

Yours respectfully,
E.S. Romanova
