Sergei Safiullin

My son Sergei has a grave disorder: congenital immunodeficiency. Unfortunately, the only way to cure him is bone marrow transplantation. And the faster it is performed, the better, because Sergei may fall ill, and any disease may be fatal for him.
We are to raise 350,000 roubles (about $10,800) for this transplantation. We cannot find such a sum all by ourselves: my husband is a medical technologist (which doesn't mean a high salary in Russia), and I am not working now, because I have to take care of our child all the time. We won't cope without your help!
Sergei will soon turn eight months. He loves playing. Yesterday he managed to sit up all by himself and was so happy! He will soon have his first upper teeth. We want him to grow up further and to smile. Please help us!
My first baby died of the same disorder when he was nine months old. It will be so terrible if we lose another child!
Thank you very much!

The doctor's comment

A joint meeting of specialists (Deputy Director of Center for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Immunology A.A. Maschan, Head of the Department of Clinical Immunology I.V. Kondratenko, Head of the Department of Marrow Transplantation E.V. Skorobogatova) has analyzed the medical record of Sergei Safiullin, born June 3, 2008. Diagnosis: X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency, confirmed by molecular genetic examination. There is evidence for familial history of severe combined immunodeficiency, laboratory evidence for the same disorder, and characteristic infectious complications. For all these reasons, the patient should receive allogeneic transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from a haploidentical donor. In view of the danger of severe infectious complications, the conditioning should be started as soon as possible.

Graft processing for haploidentical transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells requires purchase of a set for T-cell depletion (CD3, CD19 depletion on a Clinimacs apparatus). The approximate cost of this set is 350,000 roubles ($10,000-$11,000, depending on the rouble/dollar exchange rate).

News

10.04.2009 We are completing the fundraising for the benefit of Sergei Safiullin. The kid is presently at the Department of Marrow Transplantation, recovering after his BMT. The transplantation was to be performed without delay, and therefore the system for graft purification was purchased on credit. We thank everybody who has responded and helped in raising the entire sum required for the kid's treatment.
