Katya was born in the town of Sumgait of Azerbajan republic. After the
events in Nagorny Karabakh, our family had to flee from there. Now we live
in the Stavropol region, in a small village close to the town Budennovsk.
We work on a collective farm; the mother is a cook, the father is a tractor
driver. The collective farm has gone bankrupt, so we have not been getting
any money for a long time; they pay us our wages in food. We live off our
husbandry, and it is not a prosperous life. We have two children, Katya is
the elder. In summer of 1999 Katya fell seriously ill, she was diagnosed
with throat angina and couldn't fully recover after her illness. The girl
was examined in the hospitals of Budennovsk and Stavropol, but they
couldn't establish a definite diagnosis. In the end, the doctors sent us to
Moscow, to the Pediatric Clinical Hospital, where we are at the moment.
Only there she has been finally diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic
leukosis. The girl's condition grew worse. Katya is being treated; she will
need the transplantation of bone marrow. We hope that Katya's brother would
be able to be the donor. The medicine necessary for the transplantation are
very expensive, 15,000 USD; we do not have such money, so we are asking for
help. We scaresely managed to collect money to travel to Moscow, but we are
not able to pay for the treatment. Katya is 10, she is a lively and merry
girl, and she does want to live. Katya also needs donors of trombocytes.
Please help us save our girl's life! Nadezhda and Nikolai Savelyev.
