Please help our son Vova Skorokhodin, who is ten years old!
Vova fell ill in 1998. He had severe pains in his legs, and the doctors
at the regional hospital said it was osteomyelitis. He had high fever
all the time, and there were changes in the bones. The doctors carried
out an operation, but the diagnosis was
not confirmed. My son felt worse and worse; internal hemorrhages began.
He was transferred to the resuscitation ward for two weeks; there he
went through a computer examination, and a tumor was discovered above
his kidney. After the biopsy, we heard the exact diagnosis: lymphoma of
the retroperitoneal region.
The doctors told us that Vova would die in a week; his left side was
paralyzed. But we did not believe our boy was to die and asked to send
us to Moscow. The doctors said that Vova could not bear this journey,
that his high blood pressure would kill him on our way to Moscow. And
yet we insisted, saying "if he will not make it to Moscow, we will take
full responsibility for his death, but we must do whatever we can as
parents." We arrived at Moscow by plane, the ambulance immediately met
us and took us to the Oncohematology Ward of the Russian Children's
Clinical Hospital. Professor Karachunskii and all the staff took part
in our treatment. After the fifth block of chemotherapy, Vova felt
better and even was allowed to go out for walks. He could not yet walk
on his own legs, and I carried him in my arms. He was glad to see every
little leaf and flower, and I wept with happiness that my boy was alive.
In August 1998, we were discharged from the hospital, and Vova entered
the first grade in autumn. He has many friends; he is good at schooling
and is crazy about animals, always trying to feed and comfort
the homeless ones.
But Vova fell ill again in January 2000. He began to lose his eyesight.
It turned out to be a brain tumor, B-cell lymphoma. We were directed
from Lipetsk to Moscow again and went through two courses of
chemotherapy. The tumor decreased,
and his eyes opened again. But, in addition to the chemotherapy, an
operation at the Burdenko Institute is necessary: an Ommaya reservoir is
to be set. This operation will cost about 40 000 roubles (ca. 1300 USD).
My husband and I have
no such sum. I work at a chemical plant as an operator of refrigerating
units and receive a monthly salary of 347 roubles. My husband works as a
metalworker at a heating and power plant for 1967 roubles. Our elder
daughter works at a kindergarten for 500 roubles. We will never manage
to raise this sum. Please
respond to our tragedy, please help us collect the money for saving our
son's life!
