Andrei needs our help again to buy a new prosthesis. The service life
of the previous one is almost over, and, besides, Andrei has become
more than 10 cm taller than before! The new prosthesis costs
700,000 roubles ($22,500).
Otherwise, Andrei is all right. He has graduated from school and
entered the institute that he had dreamed of. We hope that he
will visit his lectures at this institute wearing a new prosthesis!
24.02.2009 Our old friend Andrei Trofimov
visited us today. He came to the hospital for a check-up, and, fortunately, he is fine.
This spring he will graduate from school and enter an institute to study law.
It is impossible to guess that he has a leg prosthesis: he walks quickly and energetically,
and his limp is almost unnoticeable.

Andrei is back to Moscow for completion of his treatment. The
doctors strongly recommend that he should have surgery
as soon as possible. Only now we have received the final account
for Andrei's prosthesis: it will cost 378,877 roubles ($14,860).
During the long time that Andrei's story was on the first page
of our Web site (last year), we raised only 66,242 roubles ($2500).
We hoped that one of our sponsors would help at that moment, but Andrei's
leg did not heal normally at the time, and that chance of surgery
was lost. Let us help this wonderful boy together!

We are completing the fundraising for the benefit of Andrei
Trofimov. Given the current state of his leg, it is impossible to make
and use a prosthesis. As soon as it becomes possible, the whole sum will
be paid: a total of 66,242 roubles (approximately $2500) has arrived
at the account of our foundation for Andrei, and Vyacheslav has promised to
donate the remaining sum.

I have to ask for your help once more. My son Andrei Trofimov needs it to
stand on his own legs again. He will manage this with a good prosthesis.
His leg was amputated in February 2006. When the sutures healed, we used
a trial prosthesis at our local hospital. A year later, in June 2007,
a real prosthesis was installed, but the desired result was not achieved.
It is hard to walk with this prosthesis, and flexion and extension in
the knee joint are poor. Also, it is just very, very painful. Andrei
is 15, and he wants to move like any normal boy of his age, to go
to school with his friends (and he is very good in school studies!).
His life is just beginning, and his destiny depends on you. Please
help us buy a suitable up-to-date prosthesis!
Yours gratefully,
Elena Trofimova

My son's name is Andrei Trofimov. I am his mother, and I am asking for your help. Andrei is 14 years old. Before his disease, he was a healthy kid. He was interested in basketball and other activities. He was always lively and busy. But he has been under treatment at the RCCH for four years. He was first admitted here in 2002 with Ewing's sarcoma of the left femoral bone. After 15 courses of chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy, he had an operation in 2003: the tumor was removed and a bone graft was placed instead. But six months later, the graft began to dissolve and a fracture of the femoral bone took place. It was no longer possible to restore the bone. An endoprosthesis was installed in 2005. But several months later, there were problems again: no engraftment of the endoprothesis took place and fistulae began to form. There was another surgery on January 26, 2006. At first glance, it was successful. But complications began on the third day, and the last hope to preserve Andrei's left leg vanished. The leg was amputated on February 9, 2006. And presently the child needs a prosthesis to have a normal active life, just as all his friends. We hope that you will support us in this trouble. Thank you very much! Elena Trofimova 18.02.2006 The doctor's comment The prosthesis will cost about 200,000 roubles ($7100). The exact sum will be known after the necessary measurements are made at the Ortho-Cosmos company (the same company that is now making a prosthesis for Alexei Shorokhov). For these measurements, Andrei's leg must be completely healed after the surgery, and then manufacture of the prosthesis should quickly begin. Donate on-line
